Hurricane Rescue Stories

These beautiful dogs were left homeless by Hurricane Katrina. They all came to us from the MuttShack rescue in Louisiana, as it was shutting down. They will all need some time to heal emotionally and physically before being adopted to their forever homes.

We're so very honored to provide them with the love and care they need to regain their confidence and happiness.

Thank you Dave and Amber for helping them get to us.

Please consider donating to Best Buddies to help with the cost of their care. You may donate either through PayPal:

Cane

Cane is a beautiful brindle shepherd mix with one ear up and the other down. Cane weighs about 35 pounds full grown and has the most beautiful 'gold colored eyes'. When I first got him his eyes were so sad but within a couple of days they have begun to sparkle and tell me thank you.

Cane is a survivor of Hurricane Katrina and recently arrived in my arms from New Orleans where he was found wandering along I90 all alone, hungry, exhausted and terrified (breaks my heart to think about this). I began fostering Cane on Wednesday, November 23, 2005.

When I first got Cane he was terrified but who could blame this little angel after all he had been through? With 150 kisses within his first 2 days at my home, living in comfort, security and quiet, Cane is healing and beginning to let go of his fear. Cane is about 2 years old, very well-mannered and learns quickly. He is the kind of dog that will lay down by your feet and stare at you with love and admiration. He is the most affectionate boy and loves to be near his guardian and feel safe. Cane gets along with other dogs, makes precious puppy sounds when he yawns, wags his tail now and is getting along fine.

Cane is being treated for heartworms and will soon be neutered. With all the trauma this boy has gone through he will not be available for adoption until sometime after the first of the year. Cane will only be adopted to a home where he will be loved unconditionally and treated like a King for the remainder of his life.

A very special thanks to Gil-Ann for being Cane's rescue angel

Nicholas and Alexandra (Nick and Alex)

Nick has been adopted!

These cuties are a bonded pair of dachsund mixes. They arrived in NC from New Orleans Thursday December 1st. Information about them will be posted as we learn more.

A very special thanks to Pam for being their rescue angel

Scrappy-doo

Scrappy is a bubbly dancing fool who’s a constant source of entertainment. Who would believe he lived through the trauma of Hurricane Katrina, he is footloose and fancy free! This agile boy has an in-born talent to perform tricks, and he’s thrilled to have someone egg him on. He can walk on his hind legs, and catch the toys he tosses into the air. When not amusing himself and others, Scrappy is a cuddly and affectionate love who’s delighted to find a warm lap to rest in. This outgoing and easygoing pupster is a friend to all dogs and a gentle companion to his feline friends. Scrappy-Doo would blend in well with an active family who secretly yearns to have a movie star in the gang! Scrappy-Doo is vaccinated, neutered and housetrained.

He arrived in NC from New Orleans Thursday December 1st.

A very special thanks to Pam for being his rescue angel

Billy

Billy is a confident playful guy. He is full-grown at about 15 pounds. He is approximately 1 year old. He is very high energy, and needs someone to take the time to work with him on his manners and obedience. He arrived in NC from New Orleans Thursday December 1st.
